Obituary for John M. Zubay Sr.

John M. Zubay, Sr. went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family on Friday, September 30, 2011, at his residence on Shadyside Avenue following a lengthy illness. He was 92.
He was born on September 26, 1919 in Leechburg, Pennsylvania, a son of the late John F. and Anna Francis Huska Zubay.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, was a Japanese prisoner of war, survived the Bataan Death March, and had received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his meritorious service.
A machinist who retired from the former Patterson Foundry, John had also worked for TS&T Pottery and Crucible Steel. He was a member of the DAV, the American Legion Post 374, and the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor.
Preceding him in death on July 1, 1998 was his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Mae Zubay, whom he married on May 27, 1946. Also preceding him was a son, Chuck Zubay, and a grandson, Kristopher Allen Zubay, as well as a sister, Mary Zubay, and three brothers, Joseph, Frank and Steve Zubay.
Survivors include three daughters, Mona Jean Judy, of Austintown, Patricia Wolfe, and Lisa Palmer, and her husband Gary, both of East Liverpool, along with two sons, John M. Zubay, Jr. and David “Andy” Zubay, and his fiancé Nedra, also of East Liverpool. A sister, Annie Troya, and her husband Dom, of Leechburg, PA, also survive, as well as a sister in law, Minnie Zubay, of Wellsville.
Other survivors include 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services are planned for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with Fr. Peter Haladej officiating. Friends may visit Monday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors.
