Daun W. Gitschier, 91

EAST LIVERPOOL – Daun W. Gitschier, of East Liverpool, passed away following a lingering illness at the age of 91 on Friday, July, 18, 2014 at the St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana.

He was born October 23, 1922 in Newell, WV, a son of the late Joseph and Marie Finley Gitschier. A 1941 graduate of Wellsville High School, Daun then served for three years with the US Navy in the South Pacific, aboard the USS Agawam during World War II.

For 31 years, he was a carrier with the US Postal Service in East Liverpool.

Surviving is his “adopted daughter”, Melissa Cunningham, and her children, Tyler, Lexi and Chaz, all of East Liverpool. Daun also leaves behind a special niece, Karen Dash of Wellsville, along with three great-nieces, Jennifer Brown and Kim Gitschier, both of Salem, and Jill Reeder of Wellsville.

In addition to his parents, Daun was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Connelly Gitschier on February 2, 2005, his son, Kurt Gitschier in 2010, as well as three brothers, Jerome, Melford and William Gitschier.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Monday, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pastor Dirk Hall of The Living Well Church will officiate at a service at the funeral home Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Wellsville, where the Tri State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors.
