EAST LIVERPOOL – Former Imperial Drive resident, Darrell Carl Serafy, 89, passed away at 2:10 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014, at the Calcutta Health Care Center.

A lifetime area resident and son of the late Carl R. and Etta Wells Serafy, Darrell was born in East Liverpool on October 16, 1924.

As a veteran of WWII, and a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he graduated from Flight Officer Candidate School, and was a multi-engine pilot while serving in the Air Corps. He owned airplanes at the Columbiana County Airport and continued his love of flying throughout his life.

Darrell was a 1943 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University in 1949.

He began his long and varied working life as an insurance statistician for Atty. Francis Lang, then onto Litton Motors, and RemCru, a division of the former Crucible Steel, in their accounting departments. Darrell later became the Comptroller of the former Patterson Industries, and retired in 1989 as the Chief Accountant of the Homer Laughlin China Co.

A member of the 1st Evangelical Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder, a Deacon, and a choir member for many years. He became associated with several travel groups, where he and his wife traveled throughout the winter for over 24 years. Their travels took them to most of the U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as South America, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, and several European countries while on two tours of the Danube and Rhine Rivers, commemorating their 50th and 60th anniversaries, from Amsterdam, Holland, to the Black Sea.

He was a member of the East Liverpool Kiwanis Club where he served as Treasurer for 20 years, American Legion Post #374, the Institute of Management Accounting, the Columbiana County Pilots Association, and the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association.

Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Marwynne Trappe Serafy, whom he married on July 15, 1951. Also surviving are his two daughters, Darolyn Sue McComas, of East Liverpool, and Deborah Lee Nicholson Och, and her husband William, of Lake Jackson, Texas, and a son David Alan Serafy, of Groton, Connecticut. There are five grandchildren who also survive, Meghan Klenotic and her husband, Luke, of Salem; Michael McComas and his wife, Charissa, of Apex, NC; Matthew McComas, of East Liverpool; Scott and Shawn Nicholson, of Freeport, Texas; and two great-granddaughters, Kiersten and Kayla McComas, of Apex, NC.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were two brothers, Delmar and Donald Serafy, along with a son-in-law, William McComas.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct full military honors. After the services family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.
