Obituary for Roxanne H. Burns (Thomas) Ph. D

Roxanne H. Burns, 63, of East Liverpool, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 5:07 a.m. at Allegheny General Hospital after a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Born June 17, 1951, in Massachusetts, she was daughter of the late Marion Thomas and Jack Sivers. She spent her early years near Binghamton, New York with her grandparents Helen and Merlin Van Aken who adopted her.

Roxanne completed her undergraduate work at SUNY Binghamton University and went on to complete her Ph.D. in biology at the University of Pittsburgh. She began teaching at Kent State East Liverpool in 1991 and was planning to retire in two years. Roxanne was the chair of the biology department at Kent East Liverpool at the time of her death. An officer and a volunteer for the East Liverpool Lions Club, she brought many members into the group. She was an officer and a Board Member of the East Liverpool-Wellsville NAACP, and served as President of the Board of Appalachian Cottage Industries – a group formed to attempt to enhance community arts and merchandizing. She was a past member of East Liverpool Band Boosters.

Roxanne is survived by her three loving children, Eric Hanke, Jonathan Burns and Emily Burns; her grandson and his wife, Jeffrey Fortino and Tara Heade; and her great-grandson, Serj Heade-Fortino; along with her sisters, Tracy Peterson and Penny Thomas.

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Michelle Henson and by her daughter, Gretchen Hanke.

Friends may visit the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, as well as one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at Dawson Funeral Home. Rev. Norm Eckert of Beechwood Free Methodist Church and Rev. Ernest Peachey of Second Baptist Church will conduct a funeral service at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Immediately following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center.
