Obituary for Elva Jean Robinson (Roush)

Lifetime area resident Elva Jean Roush Ryan Robinson slipped peacefully into Heaven at the age of 92 on Wednesday morning, December 3, 2014 at Allegheny General Hospital, where she was admitted on Tuesday evening. She was surrounded at the time of her death by her loving family, who will miss her immeasurably.

She was born in East Liverpool on August 31, 1922, a daughter of the late Edward E. and Mae Gardner Roush. A 1939 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Jean was a proud alumnus, and could hardly wait to attend the Olde Guard luncheon every summer.

In 1968, she married Sherwood “Robbie” Robinson, and together they enjoyed many years of true happiness and devotion to one another until his death on August 6, 2006.

Many would remember Jean from the former Zack’s in downtown East Liverpool, where she had been a seamstress for over 25 years, retiring in 1987. In her later years, she continued to do professional alterations and sewing from her home. She would often meet a customer at the door with a loyal canine companion nearby, until 2002 when she retired from sewing at the age of 80.

She never missed an opportunity to listen to someone in need or to inquire about the well-being of others. A longtime member of St. Aloysius Church, she was a passionate gardener and had been involved in the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post #66 at one time.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Robin E. Gallagher (Jim Miller) of East Liverpool, as well as three sons: David L. (Jean) Ryan of East Liverpool; Michael G. Ryan of Wellsville; and Edward F. (Joan) Ryan of Lakewood Ranch, FL. There are five beloved grandchildren: Raegan M. Forsyth and her husband, James, of Poland; Debbie Stewart and her husband, Harry, of East Liverpool; Steve Chapman of Rhode Island; Kimberly Gandy of Panama City, FL; and Kristeen Ryan, also of Panama City.

There are seventeen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Jean will also be missed by her “sidekick”, her dog, Jaydee.

Jean was preceded in death in 2011 by a granddaughter, Paula Chapman Faulkner.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church, with Father Peter Haladej as the celebrant. Jean will be laid to rest at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Following the burial, family and friends will gather at the Elks Lodge #258 for a continued time of fellowship and lunch.

Those wishing to do so may make contributions in Jean's memory to the Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation, 715 Gas Valley Road, New Cumberland, WV. 26047
