Obituary for J. Fraser Jackson

EAST LIVERPOOL – J. Fraser Jackson, M.D., 95, longtime East Liverpool physician, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015 following complications of old age.

Dr. Jackson was born April 27, 1919 in Coulsdon, Surrey, England, a son of Sarah McConnachie Jackson and James Henry Jackson, coming to the United States at the age of six months. He attended Central School and was a 1937 graduate of East Liverpool High School. He then graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1941, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Class of 1944. This was followed by an internship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

During World War II, Dr. Jackson served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Upon his return to civilian life, he completed a residency in General Internal Medicine at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. It was always his ambition to be a family physician like his uncle, Charles A. Fraser, M.D. of Wellsville, and Dr. Fraser’s nephew, John A. Fraser, M.D. of East Liverpool. He especially enjoyed obstetrics and general medicine. Dr. Jackson began his family practice in East Liverpool in November, 1950, retiring in 2002.

In 1970, Dr. Jackson became a founding member of the American Board of Family Practice and completed recertification exams every seven years until his retirement. He was a staff member of East Liverpool City Hospital from September 1950 through 2002, serving as medical staff president on two occasions, and was also president of the Columbiana County Medical Association twice. He was a proud member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association, and especially appreciated being honored as a “Distinguished Alumnus.” Other memberships included the Alumni Associations of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Medically, he was a member of the Columbiana County Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. For over 60 years, he was also a member of the East Liverpool Lions Club.

Dr. Jackson was a lifelong member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, an Elder and a Trustee. He especially appreciated being elected an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.

The other joys in his life, along with the practice of medicine, were his family, taking medical post-graduate courses, reading, traveling, civil war history and following the fortunes of the football teams of Michigan, Pittsburgh, and the Steelers. He also was a lifelong Pirates fan.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Irene, whom he married in 1948. Also surviving are his two loving children, David Jackson (Sarah) of Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CA, and Robert Jackson (Christine) of Hot Springs, Arkansas. His beloved daughter, Anne, of Portland, Oregon, died of cancer on February 3, 2014.

Dr. Jackson is also survived by his brother, whom he dearly loved, Dale Jackson (Alberta) of Naples, Florida, and their children Stewart and Alan Jackson as well as Esther Letzler, of Aurora, Colorado, and her children Jennifer Magistrale and Eric Letzler.

Per Dr. Jackson’s request, there will be no calling hours. Private funeral services will be conducted at the Dawson Funeral Home by Rev. Dr. Steven Cramer of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either Trinity Presbyterian Church, 110 Maine Boulevard, East Liverpool, OH 43920, or to the East Liverpool City Hospital Auxiliary, 425 West Fifth Street, East Liverpool, OH 43920.

Dr. Jackson has always said, “I was so fortunate to be an MD in the best possible city of East Liverpool, Ohio, among the best people ever.”
