Obituary for Elizabeth Pope Carter (Pope)

EAST LIVERPOOL – Elizabeth Pope Carter, of Erie Street, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, April 22, 2015. She was 89.

Born in Midland, February 8, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Deacon Ralph D. and Lois Smith Pope. A resident of this area all her life, she was a loyal member of First Baptist Church in Midland where she was the piano player for 59 dedicated years.

She was a founder of the Tri-State Promoters Cultural and Creativity Society and its driving force for many years. The organization touched countless lives through education and support services that assisted the community in many ways including music lessons, the children’s good manners workshop, back to school parties, clothing, food pantry and many deeds that were unspoken.

On August 15, 1990, Mrs. Carter was recognized by President George H. W. Bush as a "Point of Light Award” recipient which recognized citizens working to aid their communities through volunteer work, promoting private, non-governmental solutions to social issues.

Her husband, Richard W. Carter, preceded her in death on December 29, 2008. The couple married August 26, 1949. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ilene Golding, and two brothers, Ralph and James Pope.

Survivors include her two sons, Ralph D. Carter, and Richard S. “Ricky” Carter, and his wife Cathy, all of East Liverpool. She will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren: Derek Carter, Shawnita Bowen, Braxton Carter, Shannon Pruitt, Eric Carter, Jesse Carter, Cierra Carter, and Katee Carter and eight great-grandchildren, Preston Foster, Derek Carter Jr., Shauntrese Carter, Foster Carter, Chaz Pruitt, Camden Pruitt, Arian Parsons, Brittyn Carter, Zayden Matthews.

Also left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Alice Carter of Columbus and Dorothy James of Industry, Pennsylvania, and many nieces and nephews, including a beloved niece Tara James and a beloved Goddaughter Stephanie “Stevie” Pennington..

Friends may visit Sunday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 3 to 8 p.m. Rev. Cordell Fountain of the First Baptist Church will conduct a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.
