Velma M. Swiger, 85

CHESTER – Velma M. Swiger, 85, formerly of Railroad Street, passed away at Stone Pear Pavillion at The Orchards at Foxcrest, at 6:38 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 after a lengthy illness.

Born on February 18, 1930, on Talkington Fork, Dodridge County, near Center Point, WV, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Winnie Williams Strader.

Velma was a member of the First Christian Church in Chester and a member of the M & M Sunday School Class. She retired in 1986 from the former Waterford Inn, and also from the Hancock County School system, retiring in 1995 after 24 years of service. She had been a member of the Hancock County School Service Association and the Teacher & Service Personnel Retirement Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leary “Dick” Swiger, on April 24, 1986. They were married on February 15, 1948.

Surviving is her son, Leon Swiger, and his wife Sara, of New Cumberland, and two grandchildren, Jeremiah Swiger, and his girlfriend Serena Anderson, of Newell, and Amanda Swiger, of New Cumberland..

Surviving are two sisters, Elma Sliger, of Middle River, Maryland, and Goldie Nolte, of Winter Park, Florida.

Velma is preceded by two sisters, Hazel Kyle and Mildred Coffman, as well as her four brothers, Clarence, Willie, Warren and Howard Strader.

Friends may visit on Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with Pastor Dave Van Buskirk of the church, and friend Dave Willey. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery.
