Obituary for Eric C Flaherty

ERIC C. FLAHERTY, 88

EAST LIVERPOOL – Eric C. Flaherty, born on December 31, 1926 in Helensburg, Scotland, passed away at the age of 88 on Friday afternoon, November 20, 2015, at Essex of Salem. Eric was surrounded at the time of his death by his wife, Doris, and loving family members.

A son of the late Stuart S. and Catherine Lowe Flaherty, Eric came to the U.S. from Scotland in 1929, where he remained ever since. He was a 1945 graduate of East Liverpool High School, and – along with Doris – was a member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association and its Olde Guard.

Following graduation, Eric served with the U.S. Army, and later joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving in Japan.

He retired in 1982 from the former Crucible Steel, where he had worked for over 32 years in the Inspection Department.

Eric enjoyed being busy – and especially loved helping to take care of his grandchildren. He had worked part-time for Dr. Allan O’Brien at the Surgery Center following his retirement from the mill, and he held memberships at the Elks Lodge #258, the American Legion #374, the VFW Post # 66, and was also a member of Masonic Lodge #315 F&AM, Pilgrim Commandry and Keramos Council.

He and Doris and their family were longtime members of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

Doris survives him at home. They had been married since October 16, 1959.

Also surviving are two daughters, Pamela McDowell and her husband, Tim, and Cathy Beadnell and her husband, Dave, as well as a son, Bob Gbur and his wife, Carolyn, all of East Liverpool.

There are eleven grandchildren: Jeff and Rhonda Walter, Michael Kosonovich, Bobby Gbur, Richard Lowe, Melissa Gbur, Brad Kosonovich (Brandis), Aaron McDowell (Bianca), Patrick, Todd and Rebecca McDowell; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Michael and Thomas Stefl, Talia Kosonovich, Jenna and Dylan Lowe, Aiden and Kylie Gbur, and Eric’s beloved dog Woody. There are also several beloved nieces and nephews.

A sister, Connie Hughes, survives in Greenville, SC. Eric was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Flaherty.

Friends may visit with the family at the Dawson Funeral Home on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Fr. Will Lawbaugh of the church will conduct services to be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Eric will be laid to rest at Columbiana County Memorial Park where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors.
