Obituary for Dorothy Evelyn Smith (Sowers)

Dorothy E. Smith, 95

BOLIVAR, OHIO – Dorothy E. Sowers Smith, 95, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Hennis Care Center in Bolivar, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy, who was nearly 96, was still eating pancakes three meals a day and dancing in her wheelchair until a week ago.

She was born in East Liverpool on April 25, 1920, a daughter of the late Joseph and Sara McHenry Sowers. She had spent her lifetime in this area, and was a member of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1938 before she went on to attend beauty school. She was a hairdresser in her home and later worked for her sister Gert’s grocery store, Wilson’s Golden Dawn, in the city’s East End.

On May 29, 1942, she married Clyde E. Smith of Rural Valley, PA. They remained in this area to raise their family. Together, they enjoyed travelling – having visited every state but Alaska – and had spent winters in Florida for several years. Clyde preceded her in death on October 3, 2008. Later in her life, Dorothy had worked at the former Hill’s Department Store, but retired to do the things she really loved – crocheting, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren. A friend to all, she had an uncanny ability to make everyone around her feel special and valued.

Dorothy had been a member of Grace Presbyterian Church since the time she was a young girl, and had been a Deacon and helped with Bible School through the years. She was also a member of the East Liverpool Assembly #71 Social Order of the Beauceant, as well as the Crystal Chapter #18 Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving is a daughter, Carol Tice and her husband, Jeffrey, of Carrollton, OH, along with two sons: Joseph C. Smith and his wife, Claire, of Green Bay, WI, and James R. Smith and his wife, Peggy, of East Liverpool. There are nine grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her only sister, Gertrude Wilson, and by a niece, Sue Kinsey.

Friends may visit Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Allan Drake of Plum Creek Presbyterian Church will conduct funeral services on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
