Obituary for Helen L Hornbeck (Garner)

HELEN L. HORNBECK, 85

EAST LIVERPOOL – Helen L. Hornbeck, who lovingly cared for her family throughout her life, passed away in their presence at her home on Shadyside Avenue in East Liverpool on Tuesday morning, April 26, 2016, following a lengthy illness. She was 85.

A daughter of the late Earl and Hattie Adams Garner, she was born in Greenwood, WV on March 18, 1931.

She had worked at Riverview Greenhouse at one time, and retired from the former Sterling China Company after 18 years. But she most valued and cherished her job as a loving mother and grandmother. Her family meant the world to her, and she would always put them first above everything else.

Helen was a longtime member of the Virginia Avenue Church of Christ in Chester.

Her husband, Walter L. Hornbeck, passed away on September 13, 1997.

Surviving are three daughters and four sons: Iris Durbin, with whom she resided; Violet Mellon and her husband, Timothy, of West Point; Daisy Davidson and her husband, Rick, of Wellsville; Walter Dale Hornbeck of Wellsville; David Hornbeck and his wife, Melissa, of East Liverpool; Dean Hornbeck and his wife, Rosemary, of East Liverpool; and Danny Hornbeck, also of East Liverpool. Helen was preceded in death by a daughter, Pansy Hornbeck, by a grandson, Andrew W. Durbin, and by a great-grandson, Jonathon Perkins.

There are 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren, along with two brothers, Earl Garner of Tishamingo, MS and Roy Benjamin Garner of Columbus. Helen was also preceded by three sisters, Mary Hornbeck, Carol Sue Garner and Silvia Jean Garner, as well as a brother, David Garner.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Thursday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Evangelist Will Montgomery of St. Clair Avenue Church of Christ will officiate at a service to be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Friday.

Burial will take place at Spring Grove Cemetery, followed by a continued time of fellowship at the Virginia Avenue Church of Christ.
