Obituary for Verna M Mays (McDevitt)

VERNA M. MAYS, 80

EAST LIVERPOOL – Verna M. Mays, 80, of East Liverpool, passed away peacefully at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at East Liverpool City Hospital. She now joins her husband, Bruce E. Mays, who died on January 14, 2016.

Verna had come to the East Liverpool area as a young girl and had remained here ever since. She was born in Scio, Ohio, on August 31, 1935, a daughter of the late Elmer D. and Helen Etha Yost McDevitt.

A member of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1952, she was a familiar face at the former Hill’s Department Store, where she worked for many years. Verna had also been a waitress at Hoge’s and several other area restaurants.

She and Bruce were married August 9, 1969. Together, they loved traveling – especially to Arizona, Florida, and to Branson, Missouri in their motor home. Verna also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and taking care of her grandson… but secretly would joke that shopping was her #1 priority!

For many years, she was a member of Long’s Run Church.

Verna is survived by a daughter, Cheryl A. Hinton and her companion, Ron, and by a son, Greg E. Mays and his companion, Amy Mellinger, as well as a step-son, all of East Liverpool. Additional survivors include her grandchildren, Jeremy Hinton and his wife, Sarah; Aaron Widger, and Sabien Mellinger; great-granddaughters Jaylnn and Shea Hinton; step-grandchildren Josh Mays and Chelsea Mays; and a brother, Carl McDevitt and his wife, Judy.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Verna was preceded in death by a daughter, Victoria Lynn Merriman, who died in 1969. Also preceding her was a step-daughter, Melanie Guy, a step-grandson, Jerry Bibbee, a step-great-grandson, Brice Bibbee, and a sister, Mary McDevitt.

As per Verna’s wishes, there will be no service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Dawson Funeral Home.
