Nicholas R. Munoz, 77

EAST LIVERPOOL – Nicholas R. “Sonny” Munoz, of Fisher Avenue, passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 21, 2016, surrounded by many loved ones at his home. He was 77.

Born in Midland, PA, on August 12, 1939, he was a son of the late Nicholas L. and Sophia Trevino Munoz. He attended the former Lincoln High School in Midland, and spent his entire life in this area.

He had been a longtime crane operator of Crucible Steel Corporation, which became J&L Steel, where he worked until his retirement on August 12, 2001. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and especially loved the many cookouts and family get-togethers for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates games.

His first wife, Judy, preceded him in death. His second wife, Janet, whom he married on July 14, 2001, survives him at home.

Also left to cherish his memory are his children: Nicholas Munoz and his wife, Frances, of Calcutta; Deborah Walton and her husband, Mark, of East Liverpool; Greg Munoz of Calcutta; Cindy L. Munoz of East Liverpool; Brian Munoz and his wife, Renee, of Midland; and Scott D. Munoz and his wife, Amanda, of Chester. There are fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are his step-children: Jim Vasil and his wife, Cindy, of Pittsburgh; Dave Vasil and his wife, Jennifer, of Zelienople, PA; Danielle Vasil-Hottenfeller and her husband, James, of Ambridge; and Renee Vasil of North Carolina. There are eight step-grandchildren as well.

Sonny was blessed with a large family, which also included his sisters, Isabel Justice of Midland; Margaret Boyle of Midland; Rosalie Smith of Punxsutawney, PA; and Mona Shreves and Tina Wical, both of Delaware, as well as brothers Anthony Munoz and his wife, Betty, also of Delaware, and Rudy Munoz of East Liverpool. Two brothers, Leo and Thomas Quintana, preceded him in death.

Also preceding him in death was his grandson, Shawn M. Walton.

Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Trina Lewis will conduct a funeral service Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery. Following the service, friends and family will gather at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church for fellowship.
