Obituary for Virginia McKenzie (Galipo)

Virginia Galipo McKenzie, born at her family home on Ninth Street in East Liverpool on June 4, 1920, passed away peacefully with her loved ones nearby at Morningside of Cookeville, TN on Saturday, January 28, 2017. She had recently moved to that area with her son and daughter-in-law, and died at the age of 96.

A daughter of the late Cona “Nick” Galipo and Carmela Lazzaro Galipo, she had attended St. Aloysius School, where she worked for many years. Above all, she was a devoted wife and mother who provided a warm and happy atmosphere for her family and their friends.

Catholic by faith, she had belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Aloysius, as well as the Lady Knights of Columbus. Virginia also enjoyed getting together with friends in the “birthday group.”

She was preceded in death on September 30, 1977 by her husband, Lester C. “Mac” McKenzie, whom she married on June 1, 1938. They took great pride in raising their five children together, and considered themselves blessed to have such a large and loving family.

Survivors include her daughter, Saundra Ciliberto and her husband, Joseph, of The Villages, FL, and her son, Lester C. McKenzie, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Cookeville, TN. There are 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren, along with a brother, Charles Galipo of Youngstown. Virginia also leaves behind a son-in-law, Paul Lucas, of East Liverpool, and a daughter-in-law, Alice McKenzie, of Alabama.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Lucas, and by two sons, Richard J. McKenzie, Sr. and Michael A. McKenzie.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home.

Dr. Robert Cuttica, Deacon at St. Christine’s Parish in Youngstown, will conduct a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Virginia will be laid to rest beside her husband at Columbiana County Memorial Park. Following the burial, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.
