Obituary for Kathryn Bernard Harry (Bernard)

KATHRYN B. HARRY, 94

CANTON – Former East Liverpool resident and longtime city educator Kathryn Bernard Harry passed away at the age of 94 on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the Canton Christian Home in Canton, where she had resided in recent years.

She was born in Cleveland on December 16, 1922 to May McNicol and Roland John Bernard. Her grandfather was well-known East Liverpool pottery pioneer, T.A. McNicol.

A 1941 graduate of East Liverpool High School, she received a degree from Ohio University in 1945, and completed coursework at Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, Texas. She was also a graduate of a pilot program for remedial reading at the University of Texas in Austin. She and her husband, Joseph K. Harry, lived for two years at the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, where she was secretary and resident hostess. Mrs. Harry later taught school in Texas and West Virginia before coming to the East Liverpool area. Here, she taught for nearly 20 years, primarily at North Elementary, before retiring in 1989.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish at St. Aloysius Church; she also held memberships in several professional and local organizations and was a lifetime member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Her husband preceded her in death on October 5, 1964.

Survivors include her children: Annette Halle and her husband, Tim, of Canton; Lynne Pomeroy, also of Canton; Kathie Ash of Cape Canaveral, FL; Dr. Joseph C. Harry of Butler, PA; and Timothy J. Harry of Pepper Pike, OH. There are ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as a niece, Carole Slaven, and a nephew, Dr. Thomas Slaven and his wife, Eileen.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Harry was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Alice Slaven.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the James J. Hocking Center (formerly St. Aloysius School), with Father Peter Haladej as the celebrant. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Following the service, the family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship and luncheon.

Mrs. Harry will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery in East Liverpool, Ohio.
