Obituary for Carl C Mooney

Carl C. Mooney, 91

NEWELL, WV – Carl C. Mooney, of Newell, passed away Wednesday morning, July 5, 2017 after suddenly taking ill. He was 91.

Born in Bellaire, Ohio, March 4, 1926, he was a son of the late Ross Mooney and Elizabeth Ulbright Mooney Wilson. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Wells High School Class of 1949 where he was a member of the band and baseball team. Carl worked at Homer Laughlin China Company for 47 years until retiring in 1993. He had been the chief engineer for the company and was also involved in maintenance and construction.

He was a member of the Newell United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He also was a member of the East Liverpool Elks Lodge 258, the Chester VFW Post and was a charter member of the Chester American Legion Post 121. He helped organize the East Liverpool and Chester Old Timers Baseball organizations and was active in the PTA organizations when his children were younger.

Carl was very active in the New Cumberland Lodge #22 of the Free and Accepted Masons and was a Past Worshipful Master. Through the lodge he held memberships in the Scottish Rite, Osiris Shrine in Wheeling and the Order of the Eastern Star.

He is survived by his wife, June D. Wagoner Mooney, whom he married in September 27, 1950. Together they raised three sons, Terry Mooney and his wife, Lee, Gary Mooney and his wife, Carolyn, and Kelsey Mooney and his wife, Iris, all of New Cumberland. There are five grandchildren, Erin Dudley and her husband, Justin, Mathew Mooney, Carly Mooney, Corinne Purks, and Charles Laughlin, III, along with a great-grandchild Elijah Purks.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Kenny Mooney, a half-brother Clarence Wilson, a step-brother Ed Wilson, two step-sisters Eileen and Lorain Wilson, and a half-sister Dorothy Busby, as well as his step-father Ed Wilson.

Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rev. Kara Rowe will conduct a funeral service Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell where the New Cumberland Masonic Lodge will conduct a service.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
