Obituary for Betty M Six (Thomas)

Betty M. Shaw Six peacefully passed away at the age of 97 at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Price Road Rehabilitation Center in Newark, Ohio. A longtime East Liverpool resident, Betty had relocated to that area recently and died in the presence of her family who had been with her since she became ill suddenly on Thursday.

She was a daughter of the late Raymond Walker Thomas and Anna Marie Mains Thomas, born at home in Boston, PA, on May 7, 1920. A 1940 graduate of McKeesport High School, she came to East Liverpool just prior to her marriage to her first husband, Lloyd B. Shaw, in 1943.

She was a loving mother and devoted homemaker and had also been manager of the kitchen at Beaver Local High School for many years.

A member of Calcutta United Presbyterian Church, Betty taught Sunday School there for over 25 years, and had been an elder. She also belonged to the Keenager Seniors and Christian Women Association, as well as AARP, and was a past member of the Columbiana County Home Extension.

Her first husband, Lloyd, preceded her in death on August 10, 1964. She then married Oscar J. Six in 1969; he passed away in May, 1998.

She is survived by her three children: a daughter, Charlene Underwood and her husband, Ronald, of Newark; and two sons, James C. Shaw of East Liverpool and Gary L. Shaw and his wife, Donna, of New Waterford. Betty also leaves behind ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called her Grandma Betty.

She is also survived by two brothers, Edwin Thomas and Leonard Thomas.

Preceding her in death were four stepdaughters and one stepson, as well as three sisters and two brothers. A daughter-in-law, Janet Shaw, passed away in February 2010.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home.

Evangelist Will Montgomery will officiate at a service to be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park, followed by a continued time of remembrance and a luncheon at the First Church of the Nazarene in East Liverpool.
