Obituary for Fred D. Smith

Fred D. Smith, 94

EAST LIVERPOOL – Fred D. Smith, of Calcutta, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Calcutta Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. He was 94.

Born in East Liverpool, November 3, 1922, he was a son of the late Arthur H. and Dorothy Albright Smith. For most of his life he lived in this area and worked for the former Crucible Steel Company.

A veteran of WWII, he served with the U.S. Navy. He graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1940 and was a member of the VFW Post 66. He loved to fish.

His wife, Norma L. Smith, preceded him in death on December 21, 2009. The couple married March 4, 1963.

There are three step-daughters: Elsie Marie McDevitt and her husband, Joe, of Lakeland, Florida; Katherine “Kathy” Hughes of Calcutta; and Anthie Elaine Kruzel of Eudura, Kansas. His sister survives, Thelma Lou Simmons of Essex, Maryland and a brother, Arthur W. Smith of California, as well as 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Rev. Norman Eckert will conduct a private family funeral service at the Dawson Funeral Home.

The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.
