BURDELL LEE “BUD” BLACKMORE

GLENVILLE, WV – Former Smiths Ferry resident Burdell L. “Bud” Blackmore passed away at the age of 88 at the Genesis Healthcare Center in Glenville, West Virginia following a lengthy illness. He had spent his entire lifetime in this valley until moving to Craigsville, West Virginia in 2014 to be nearer to family there.

He was born at home in Midland, Pennsylvania on June 10, 1929. A son of the late Burdell and Elizabeth McCullough Blackmore, he was a 1947 graduate of Midland High School. He entered the service with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, spending much of his time in Korea repairing vehicles with the motor pool.

Bud returned home to work at Patterson Foundry, then worked as a motor inspector for the Crucible Steel Corporation for over 20 years, until his retirement. Later in his life, he worked for the U.S. State Department, but he was probably best known as the owner and operator of Blackmore TV Repair, a job he loved and worked at for 40 years.

A licensed pilot, he was the owner of a Cessna 150 airplane and had travelled extensively around the world in it. He had also been an avid square dancer for most of his life. Bud was a lifetime member of the Smiths Ferry Methodist Church.

He and his first wife, the former Dorothy McKinley, were married December 5, 1952 and were the parents of two children, who survive. Dorothy passed away in December 1983. Bud then married Martha “Marty” Gregory on June 11, 1984, and she preceded him in death in March 2010.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Spencer and her husband, Jay, of Craigsville, WV, and a son, Burdell “Lee” Blackmore II, of Negley, Ohio. Bud also leaves behind three grandchildren: Jeremy, Jayme and John Lee Spencer, along with two great-grandchildsons, Spencer and Christian.

Additional survivors are a brother, Bill Blackmore and his wife, Sandy; a sister, Bonnie Diddle; a step-daughter, Robin Jenkins and her husband, Mike; a step-son, Scott Randa, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until noon on Monday, where the Rev. Chuck Adkins of the church will conduct a funeral service at noon. The family will continue their time of fellowship at the Dawson Family Center.

Bud will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery.

The family wishes to publicly acknowledge their appreciation to Bud’s son-in-law, Jay, for his compassion in caring for him for several years.
