Obituary for Herman F. Langer Sr.

Herman F. Langer, Sr., of Sprucevale Road, formerly of Sunset Lane, in East Liverpool, passed away at the home of his daughter in Nokomis, Florida at 4:55 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2017. “Herm”, as he was well known to family and friends, was 89.

He was born in Flint, Michigan to Anton E. and Johanna Brohn Langer on November 10, 1927. A 1945 graduate of Flint Northern High School, Herm was a member of the baseball team which was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during his senior year, and served with the Seabees in the Pacific Theatre in the midst of World War II.

On July 1, 1950, he married Beverly J. Moulton Langer, and the two relocated to the East Liverpool area in 1960 with their family. It was here that Herm became associated with New York Life insurance agent Ben Feldman, with whom he worked as an underwriter and office manager for over 33 years, retiring in 1993.

Herm and Bev were active members of St. John Lutheran Church, where Herm served on church council, was an elder and a deacon, and had sung in the church choir. He was an enthusiastic Michigan sports fan – and he especially loved playing golf. For many years, he had coached men’s recreational softball, and he bowled competitively for over 40 years. He and Bev enjoyed ballroom dancing together and were active in several card clubs over the years. Herm was also a member of the Elks Lodge #258, as well as Glenmoor American Legion Post #736, where he was past commander. But what brought him the most joy was spending time with Bev and their family.

Bev preceded him in death on August 5, 2014.

Surviving are two daughters and one son: Deborah Borato and her husband, Ron of Nokomis, FL; Michelle “Missy” Langer of Virginia Beach; and Herman F. “Fred” Langer, Jr. and his wife, Kim, of East Liverpool. There are three grandchildren: Anton F. Langer (Tabetha), Stephanie N. Garner Vlahovic (Rad), and Casey L. Garner, and many special friends, including George and Nancy Hornick.

In addition to his wife and his parents, Herm was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Adams, and by a brother, Edward Langer.

Friends may visit with the family at the Dawson Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

A memorial service will take place at St. John Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, with Rev. Eric Edwards of the church as the officiant. Herm will then be laid to rest beside his wife at Columbiana County Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Valley Oaks Care Center for the attention and care Herm received there.

Those wishing to do so may send contributions in Herm’s memory to donations to St. John Lutheran Church, 400 Hill Blvd., East Liverpool, Ohio 43920 or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Florida 34275.
