Obituary for Barbara J. Mays (Brown)

Beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Barbara J. Brown Mays, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, December 10, 2017. She had spent most of her lifetime in East Liverpool, and died at Essex III of Salem with her family at her side.

A daughter of the late Bert and Mina McCormack Brown, Barb was born in Triplet, Kentucky on April 7, 1935. She moved to the family farm in the Hammondsville area as a young girl, where she lived until her marriage to Robert E. Mays on October 28, 1959. She and Bob relocated to East Liverpool, where they proudly raised their family together.

Family was extremely important to both Barb and Bob, and they loved hosting and attending large gatherings and reunions on both sides of their families. She also loved flower gardening and taking care of her yard and home.

Bob preceded her in death on December 13, 2000.

Barb was a devoted and loving mother to five daughters: Meledy Dawson and her husband, Tom, of Boardman; Robbyn Saling of Hamilton, Ohio; Roberta Frazee and her husband, Chris, of Batavia, Ohio; April Thompson and her husband, Don, of East Liverpool; and Melissa Caldwell and her husband, Steve, also of Batavia. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Bernadine Lynn Mays, who died in 1963.

Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren, along with a stepdaughter, Martha Hart and her husband, Gerald, and two stepsons, Robert L. Mays and his wife, Marie, and Russell A. Mays. Barb is also survived by two sisters, Joan Copps and Rose Stella, as well as a brother, Jack Brown and his wife, Doris, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Jewell Pickens and Verna Wolfe, and two brothers, Bill Brown and Jim Brown.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Thursday, where the family will be present from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Pastor Joyce Reynolds of the Concord Church in Salem will officiate for a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Thursday. Immediately following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for a continued time of fellowship.

Barb will be laid to rest beside her husband and daughter at Calcutta Cemetery.
