Obituary for Rachel "Rae" Smith

Rachel (Rae Feldman) Smith passed away in Granbury, Texas on January 15, 2018, at the age of 91. Rae, as she was known, was born on March 8, 1926 in East Liverpool to Isaac and Bertha Feldman.

She was the youngest and last survivor of nine siblings. At the age of 21, Rae moved from Ohio to Los Angeles, California. She married Fred Sanders Smith in 1956, and they moved to
La Puente, California, where they raised their two children. Rae was a very devoted mother and homemaker. After her children became adults, she became very active in several volunteer
groups, including Queen of the Valley Hospital, Covina Valley Playhouse, a shell collector’s club, a mineral collector’s club, and several others.

During her later years, Rae especially enjoyed collecting teddy bears and dolls. Rae and her husband were also very fond of cats. Over the years, they adopted many stray and abandoned felines, who became their four-legged children. After moving to Granbury in 2010 to live near her son and his family, Rae adopted one of the family cats, named Winky. As a resident of the Courtyards at Lake Granbury, Winky became her devoted companion until her death in 2017. Rae also enjoyed spending time reading her many books and magazines, watching classic movies, and playing bingo with her friends.

Rae was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1999. She is survived by her son Michael and his wife, Sharon, of Granbury; and by her daughter Deanna and her husband, Gregory, of Lompoc, California. She also leaves behind a granddaughter, Coleen; a grandson, Max; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia.

Rabbi Amy Greenbaum will conduct a funeral service at the Dawson Funeral Home at noon on Tuesday, February 6. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Rae will be laid to rest at B'nai Jacob Cemetery.
