Obituary for Charles Edward Sargent

Charles Edward Sargent, 87

NEW CUMBERLAND, WV – Charles Edward “Chuck” Sargent, of New Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the Weirton Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was 87.

Born in Weirton, February 12, 1931, he was a son of the late James and Marie Chambers Sargent. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of Nessly Chapel United Methodist Church.

A member of the Weir High Class of 1949, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree at West Liberty University as well as a Master’s Degree from West Virginia University. He then began his career in education where he was associated with the Weirton School System for over 30 years, first as a teacher and later as principal at Weir Middle School until retiring in 1989.

A member of the Chester American Legion and the Chester VFW, he was also active at church where he served as the chairman of the administrative board.

His wife, Polly Johnston Sargent, survives at home. The couple met in college and married June 12, 1958. Together they had four children: a daughter Susan Gray and her husband, Greg, of Warrenton, Virginia, and two sons, Steven Sargent and his wife, Aimee, of Reading, Pennsylvania, and Shawn Sargent and his wife, Amber, of Weirton. He was preceded in death by a son, James P. Sargent, in 2004.

There are four grandchildren: Elizabeth and Brandon Sargent, Emma Gray and Mackenzie Sargent, as well as one brother, John Sargent and his wife, Jeanne, of Conway, South Carolina.

Friends may visit Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
