Obituary for Donald P. Smith

Donald Paul Smith, 87

Port Charlotte, FL - Donald Paul Smith, formerly of East Liverpool and Wellsville, died peacefully at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte, Florida on July 9, 2018, after a lengthy illness at the age of 87.

Donald was born in Highlandtown in October 30, 1930 and attended Wellsville High School. After marrying his beloved wife, he spent four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. For over 50 years, he worked as a heavy machinery mechanic with the Operating Engineers Local 66 in Youngstown.

He was a volunteer fireman in Wellsville after leaving the service. Don was an avid fisherman and could spend many hours on his boat. Don also enjoyed bowling for many years and was always eager to help whomever he could. Donald loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren and his many friends, along with his special Shih Tzu, JJ.

Donald will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather whose greatest passion was helping others.

Donald spent the last 34 years in Port Charlotte, Florida, in the home he loved on the Peace River, along with his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara Jean Peterson Smith (Jeany). He is survived by his wife in Florida; three sons in Ohio, Donald R. Smith (Ida), Canfield; Douglas P. Smith (Cheri), Poland; David J. Smith (Cathy), East Liverpool; and one daughter, Susan Smith Glover (Pat), Port Charlotte, Florida, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy J. Smith and Hazel Bettis Smith; two brothers, Roy Junior Smith and Clyde Smith; and two sisters, Marjorie Lee and Evelyn Smith.

His son-in-law, Pat Glover will conduct funeral services at the Dawson Funeral Home Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.

Following the service at the funeral home family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center.

Burial will be at the Highlandtown United Methodist Church Cemetery.
