Obituary for Dorothy Hughes (Stanley)

Dorothy N. Stanley Hughes, formerly of Ohio Avenue in East Liverpool, passed away surrounded by her family at Valley Oaks Care Center at 11:33 p.m. Sunday, December 18, 2016 and now joins her husband and son and other loved ones in Heaven. She was 92.

A daughter of the late Earl “Hoop” Stanley and Berlie M. Farnsworth Stanley, she was born in East Liverpool on August 31, 1924.

Dorothy attended East Liverpool schools until she was needed more at home, caring for her younger brothers when their mother became ill. From that time on, she put others first, and was happiest when she was tending to her loved ones – especially her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, and had also waitressed at various area restaurants through the years.

Preceding her in death on February 18, 2001 was her husband, Herbert “Buck” Hughes, whom she married on July 2, 1943. She and Buck enjoyed traveling after his retirement from Crucible Steel, and particularly loved driving through the Smoky Mountains together.

Two daughters survive: Naomi “Sis” Sullivan, and Carol Shay and her husband, Dennis, as well as a daughter-in-law, Kathy Hughes, all of East Liverpool. A son, Herbert “Huck” Hughes, preceded Dorothy in death on March 2, 2006.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren, as well as a brother, Earl Stanley of Fontana, CA. Another brother, Harold “Red” Stanley, preceded her in death in March of this year.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Pastor Norm Eckert of Beechwood Free Methodist Church will conduct a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Dorothy will be laid to rest near her husband and son at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
