Tikun Olam (Fixing the world)

I was greatly saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Braslawsce.  Although East Liverpool doesn't appear on many maps, growing up in this special town made a lasting impact on my identity.  With a very small but close-knit Jewish community, we had a lot in common with the Braslawsce family. Both of our parents were Jews from Pittsburgh, who left the "Big City" to make their lives in East Liverpool. While in Pittsburgh, Jews tend to get lost in with the numbers, in East Liverpool, there was no hiding our Judaism. Paul was very proud of his heritage, and always used Yiddish phrases & expressions when talking with us. He always called himself "a simple Jew from McKeesport", and he never looked for honor. Paul had a smile and a warmth that were contagoious to everyone around. When his lovely wife, Aileen, taught us Yiddishkeit (Judaism) in her home, we always looked forward to Paul coming him and sharing a story or a joke with us. Paul's life mission was to improve the world, by being actively involved in his society. I'll never forget when he ran for County Commissioner in the early 1990s.  We anxiously went to the Braslawsce's home to follow the election results. In the end, spoke to the media like a true statesman. "Columbiana County spoke", Paul said. Although I did not realize at the time how involved Paul was in social organziations, I am not at all surprised. His life mission was to make the world that we live in a better place, a term that the Jewish prophets call "TIKUN OLAM". Although Paul's physical presence has left this world, his legacy will live on through all who knew him, his home town of East Liverpool which he loved so much, and espeically his wife, Aileen, and sons, Billy, Benjy, Ian, and Eric, and grandkids, who meant the world to Paul.  I will greatly miss Paul, may his memory be a blessing for all!
